Things I've Learnt Since Graduating

graduation teddy bear

Jokes on me. I thought when I left uni I was done with learning for a while and could go back to chilling and forgetting everything I spent four years committing to memory.

Psh. Apparently not.

I actually finished my degree a few months ago and have been struggling to find a job since then. So aside from two (amazing) holidays, the last 3 months have consisted of me slowly turning into a potato. But also becoming a lil' bit wiser, yaknow?

You think when you're in uni and you're learning and growing, you've become an adult and this is life now. Omg you're paying bills, wtf you have to spend sunday defrosing the freezer, yawn meal plans and shopping lists. But life has changed yet again and I've become so damn insightful learning all this stuff about myself and life and all sorts.

1. I still don't really know how to do clothes washing.

When I'm asked to put a load in I am filled with dread like what the fuck is this machine and why are there so many letters on it and how much soap do I put in it? Martin just took the role of clothes washer when we started living together and until then my mam had done it all sooooo basically what I've learned is how much I need Martin to not dump me...

2. I'm not good at interviews.

This is actually a hard one to swallow because I am a people person and as a general rule people like me. This has served me really well with placement interviews and weekend jobs in the past. But I've realised it just doesn't cut it in the grown up, scary job market, and I'm really struggling.

3. I'm atually really messy.

I've been in denial for ten years. People keep telling me how messy I am but they're wrong and NO UR MESSY GO AWAY. I have a serious skill of being able to leave at least seven things I own in every single room in the house. A room they are not supposed to be in. I'm super clean and all about that bleach and rubber gloves but I am hella untidy.

4. Being clever and going to a great uni means shit.

I think a lot of people like me who got all As and A*s in school get into the mindset that they're awesome and being naturally academic will get them everywhere. (Thanks teachers you lying sonsofbitches). It doesn't. It's so much who you know and being at the right place at the right time and having that extra something.

5. I have nothing to do all day and still don't have time for the gym.

I love the gym, don't get me wrong. When I'm there it's one of the highlights of my day but I STILL manage to procrastinate and put it off. Every single day.

6. I have literally zero idea of what to do with my life.

And I'm not even open minded about it. I didn't struggle through 4 years of uni to get a job I hate but I also didn't do it to not have a job and sit in my knickers all day eating sticky toffee sauce out of the bottle. I try to apply for different types of jobs but it just increases the vast range of industries I get rejected from.

7. I live in the future so much more than the now.

It's funny because my whole teenage life revolved around living in the past and ruminating over things I said wrong and what I could have done better and omg what did that mean? But now, probably because my life is a bit shit, I live in the time where I have a job and a cat and have money to buy nice things. Which is stupid and I don't want to wish my life away.

8. I can't keep plants alive.

Nope. I don't know how much to water them, or I just forget, or I keep them in the wrong place. I always thought I would be the green thumbed type being a lover of animals and nature and what not. But I am just a coldblooded plant killer so buh-bye I'm off to IKEA to stock up on fake grass and orchids.

9. I actually kind of like waking up early.

WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT IT? Not saying I do it on a regular basis, let's not get ahead of ourselves. 9.30 is a happy time for me. But when I have awoken at 7.30/8am I've had a really good, productive day. That's awesome for me to realise because I get genuinely terrified of having to wake up at 6.30 or whatever for a job.

Look at me learning valuable life lessons and becoming self-aware.

  4. Since graduating, I've realized the importance of practical experience alongside academic knowledge. Understanding real-world applications, especially through tools like Dissertation Case Study help, has been crucial in bridging the gap between theory and practice. It's a reminder that continuous learning and seeking the right support can make all the difference in your career.
